I've been wanting to get into Monster Hunter but I didn't care for the demo since it wasn't that fun to me when no one sticks together and Tries to be the hero all the time.

But I'm not sure if the game is even worth it since I'm sure that playing it online is the whole point right?

Yes but with more players farming for mats becomes easier.

Not necessarily, tons of people play it solo. I myself went through most of the game solo until late to end game.

Monsters have lower health when solo and they become easier to manage.

You can play solo, but it's more fun to play with a group.

Its totally doable solo, but if you have a few friends playing with you, it's stellar.
  • #6
Yeah, when you do a fight solo the enemies aren't as tough as they would be in a multiplayer match.

I know my brother played the game entirely offline and he had fun.

Without multiplayer it's like a 40-50 hour game tops, with multiplayer it's 100+

Your reason for not liking the multiplayer is really strange though. Just play with some people from the website you're posting on.

Should be. I played the game entirely solo all the way to HR 50. Though maybe you'll need MP if you want an easier time with the grind further than that.

Not really, i'm introvert in both real life and online. I get anxious especially with people I don't know so I prefer playing solo

I played it completely in solo and it's fine. I guess it will be more fun when you play with friends

While MH solo is okay, the series really shines with MP.

I can honestly say for me that the series is not worth it just for SP, but i've played many entries in the series so that fatigue on that stuff is probably much higher for me than it would be for you, probably.

Endgame is pretty terrible without multiplayer. Also, you cant beat the likes of behemoth solo unless youre exceptionally skilled and have godlike patience

The grinding for mats to make your gear might become much more of a chore if you only play by yourself, but the core gameplay should still be pretty fun.

I would have trouble dragging myself through one of these games with randoms online, let alone by myself. You need somebody there to distract you from the repetitiveness and share your pain when the thing you need doesn't drop for the eighth fucking time. Monster Hunter is a game to be played with friends or not at all.

For what it's worth, you don't need to do any communication in MH. The first thing I did when I started the game is to mute off the voice chat. The only communication I do in the game is sending sticker and premade shoutout after each hunt.

As to your question, solo is fine, but like other said the game really shines in MP. 90% of my hunt consist of playing with randoms, and majority of it just dicking around doing random hunt lol.

There is also two monsters designed around multiplayer (both are post launch monsters).

It may contradict with others but at least to the point you beat I recommend you to go solo.
It would be a lot more fun to play with others once you learn the basics, than just go multiplayer blindly.

I think you mean to reply to OP and not to me, i'm just explaining why people are a bit iffy to playing online with others.

I completed the game solo at about ... 90ish hours maybe?
Sad I can't do the multiplayer hunts solo though.

Anyway it's a LOT of fun solo, and balanced really well. Highly recommended.
Some difficulty spikes (beware anything with horns...), but if I can surpass them - and believe me I suck at games these days - then you can too!

  • #19
Humans are overrated anyway. Play solo

i think the game truly shines in multiplayer, but it's still a great game solo

I spent over 200hrs playing solo + some SOS flares.
You should probably just get Plus though.

I've been playing it on ps4 without ps+

I've played a lot of mon hun games and the only one I really multi-played a lot was mh4.

I prefer playing alone in MH, so I should say so.

I always enjoy playing MH solo, so yes. It depends on the type of player you're.

While I enjoy playing with others too, there are only a one monster I consider that you really need others to enjoy.

Kulve whatever, the big golden ram, I don't think it's possible to beat that alone? Or at least it would take too long for it to be enjoyable. Its drops are quite unique and useful though.

I played MH3U and 4U completely solo up to G rank, but MHW has me spoiled with SOS lol. Overall I'd say it's still worth it.

160+ hours in (with no end in sight, for better or worse!). I started the game with the same mentality as OP, but quickly learned what to solo and what to do in a group, which is most of my hunts. Even playing with random people, most hunts are more interesting and easier with a full 4-hunter squad. I found that having a basic set of custom gestures helps a lot to coordinate, and once you start realizing what you are supposed to do in the quest you're doing and how you have to fight the monster, then it becomes buttery smooth.

I don't get the idea that "no one sticks together and Tries to be the hero all the time". You're not competing with anyone, you don't get an advantage for doing certain things instead of others. And you don't need to focus all the time on just one monsters. Sometimes it's better to spread out and take the easier monsters on your own, then regrouping to focus on the later monsters, which usually are tougher.

That being said, the game can be soloed and it plays just fine, like any other MonHun. But, as others have said, playing with others only enhances the game.

I would have trouble dragging myself through one of these games with randoms online, let alone by myself. You need somebody there to distract you from the repetitiveness and share your pain when the thing you need doesn't drop for the eighth fucking time. Strongly disagree. I have never played with anyone I know and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Enemies only scale up to two players. So having a 3 or 4 hunter party will make them easier than having two people, or even doing it solo, since your DPS is much, much higher.

The game is incredibly fun even when playing it solo. Plenty of people play it like this, and while the online part is definitely a huge focus of the game it's still a great single-player game.

Excluding a couple of monsters they added later which seem to be exclusively designed around multiplayer. Idk about those.

I played The majority of the game solo.

Very soloable if you put in the time. The benefit of online is that you can have others lift you up on the monsters you aren't strong against. When going solo make sure your open to trying and building sets for several weapons types.

It's still a great game solo, you will miss some stuff, you can still get more than 100 hour of play just doing solo stuff.

I played both a lot, about two thirds of my play time was in MP, but I played like 500 hours, and only really started doing MP after the story stuff.

I would say it isn't worth it.

The whole game is coop for me. It'd be incredibly boring single.player.

It's possible to play the game solo only, but you'll get bored quickly, since grinding for jewel or KT's weapon is more fun and faster with friends or randoms.

It is totally worth it solo as well.
I do recommend trying to play it with other people as it is good there too. Even better if you play with friends.

I personally play solo most of the time.

Yes! I think it is a much better game solo. The monster focuses on you and you will never have to worry about other people dying and failing the quest for you.

I played the whole game solo. I only tried to play the Behemoth MP since it does not scale for solo. It was not a fun experience since people carted left and right.

(I should say that I think the game would be amazing playing with a friend though)

Can I beat the solo campaign without having to grind?
what are mats? I'm assuming that the game rewards you with rare items or materials to enhance your character
but , can I just beat the last boss with the default weapons a.k.a no need to grind?

I never upgrade weapons in games when I know they are easy ( like dragons dogma, my first run was only using what the game threw at me)
and never grinding upgraded or cared to look at what weapons were the strongest and where to find them.

Its doable but boring? The main allure of this game, for me, was being able to play with randoms. I know some people don't like that, but there are some monsters I really hate fighting alone and having another person or a 3 piece that's already dope is much better for me. Helps me learn better and also how to be a good teammate in those situation. Other than that, yeah, i guess play solo

I'll be honest with you: I'm not sure Monster Hunter is the game for you if you're not big on upgrades and crafting. The entire gameplay loop is based on grinding for materials to create and upgrade weapons and armor.

Cant skip the grind, especially solo.

You need upgraded material that's the whole gameplay loop.

Might not be a game for you

I played it connected but I've never accepted any invitation lol and my friends didn't buy the game. It's right now my third best game of the year. Sadly I didn't finish the story because I got burned due to my style of play but I gave it around 40hs and I could say the first 20/30hs were fantastic.

  • #43
There's only 2 monsters whose HP doesn't scale for single player, so if you don't care about them you never have to buy PS+.

Some people say monsters are harder solo, but they're completely wrong. This game is so much easier solo.

Yeah, but it's sooooo much better with friends. Hell, even using SOS Flare to summon some Insect Glaives from Japan is a blast.

I played most by myself though. Feel free to join the Discord to ask for advice!

i thought multiplayer made it easier today i found out its the opposite i wanted to try GS to main it and started playing some elder missions and the longest it got was 10 minutes i managed to kill 1 in less then 6 minutes without a good set up no aguments no decorations , in the other hand if i had people with me it would take 10-15 minutes easily.

It wouldn't be for me, no, but that's because I played with friends and didn't treat it like a solo game.

If I did, I don't think I'd have finished it.

I'm one of the few who thinks the game plays better solo. I have around 300h and most of it playing solo with the occasional multi while farming for monsters I have some difficulty.
So yeah, for me, it's worth it even if you don't have plus, and you should really play it.

Yes it is, just don't intend on getting everything or seeing all the content, but there's more than enough inside as well as outside the main storyline. In fact if you're a new player to the series I'd say it's better to play solo at first (at first could mean until you clear the campaign, why not).

You can play through world solo, but you might find it to be a touch tricky at the start until you get the better weapons and armor. But still definitely doable.
  • #50
Some people say monsters are harder solo, but they're completely wrong. This game is so much easier solo.

Funny enough, the game is harder if you play in a duo than playing solo, or with two or three other people because of how the HP of the monsters scales.
